Celebrating the role models and organisations empowering women in construction and engineering
This year Construction News and New Civil Engineer are once again joining forces to champion the role of women in construction and engineering. Following the success of our 2022 Inspiring Women in Construction and Engineering event, the two publications will work together to provide networking opportunities and learning resources to help women make career progress and celebrate organisations being great places to work for women. With a continued focus on encouraging the development of women within the sector and improving EDI policy, the Inspiring Women event programme will bring together women and male allies from across both sectors to network, learn and celebrate their successes.
This year's event programme commenced with the 'Unlocking the potential for flexible working' webinar Wednesday 8 March 2023. The webinar will brought together a panel of experts to discuss will the benefits of flexible working to attract and retain talent in the construction and engineering sectors with a panel of industry experts.
This years Inspiring Women in Construction and Engineering Awards return to recognise the women and teams making outstanding contributions to gender diversity within their industry.
The categories and criteria for the awards aim to recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals and organisations striving to make the construction industry and their organisations great places to work for women. With categories designed to showcase both individual and organisation wide initiatives.
This years awards are bigger than ever with 10 new categories to celebrate the exceptional women and teams within our industry.
The Inspiring Women in Construction and Engineering conference brings together women and allies from both sectors for a half day conference. The event will showcase the inspiring role models and demonstrate how organisations are striving to improve diversity and empower women in the sector.
This is what our editors and partners have to say
I am delighted that Inspiring Women in Construction and Engineering is back in 2023, bigger and better than ever. Last year’s event was a real eye-opener for me. It was incredible to witness the breadth and depth of discussion about issues impacting on women working in the built environment. WICE is a crucial forum to showcase what the industry is doing well – as well as where it still needs to go further to achieve equality of opportunity for women. The event is a fantastic forum for women to show solidarity and share their experiences – but it is also crucial that men within the industry get involved in the event and contribute to debate in order to provide allyship to their female colleagues.
We are extremely proud to play a leading role in driving equality, diversity and inclusion across the industries we work in, which is fundamentally at the heart of everything we do here at Finning. Being a partner in the Inspiring Women in Construction and Engineering programme enables us to ensure we embed diversity of thought and action across everything we do - from our interactions with our own colleagues and customers through to helping to shape a more open future for the construction and engineering sectors. It's a real honour to be part of such a progressive and inspirational group of companies, and we're looking forward to learning about the impactful work others are doing to drive diversity, and in sharing our own experiences and future plans to continue to reinforce the importance of equality and in having a secure and inclusive environment for our colleagues and customers.
Supporting Inspiring Women in Construction and Engineering is a natural part of Willmott Dixon’s commitment that we have a more diverse and inclusive construction industry. We have an ambition to achieve gender parity by 2030, with currently over 30 per cent of our people being women. The shared learning, inspirational stories and best practice we get from this campaign is a fantastic example of how the industry can come together to drive positive change. It’s helped inform our own approach to equality and inclusion and we look forward to working with many like-minded and talented people to move this agenda forward in 2023.
We are really proud to be part of the Women in Construction and Engineering Programme as it enables us to further embed our global Maximizing Impact Strategy where we made a decision to include inclusivity targets alongside our financial ones. One of these targets – our 40% women in the workforce, 30% women in leadership – has accelerated our drive towards gender parity. I’m looking forward to learning the impact other organisations are having, and sharing what we are doing, to enable us to continue making significant strides in improving representation, investment into under-represented focused programmes, increased engagement, allyship and accountability across our business and wider industry.
